He Moved | Chapter 7

~Baby~

Heavy feet galloping with glee

Trotting around house

Thump thump thumping on carpet

Clip clop clipping on kitchen tile

Waking my eyes from a blanketed corner, I see him

I always wake to see him

Blue eyes shut, curled out of reach

Always out of reach

Lifting my head, pointed ears twitch

I hum a sigh for Mom

He lifts his head

Mom stretches and yawns from the couch beside me

He pants raspy hot breaths

His foot sliding on my blanket

Off, Bo

Green grass perfumes the air as he stands

Dirt-caked dry paws smell earthy and wild

His cold nose touches mine

My head raises high with my spirits

I pull to him

He jumps back

Retreating to his corner

Trailing the carpet, I follow

My moving target settles

Laying in wait

Huffing in silence

Pointed ears twitch when I hum

P and B grass 2

Speeding my legs and hands itching to reach him

Black fur softer than my bedtime blanket

White bellied as bright and clean as the tub

I long to feel that fur again

To touch his pillowy tail

Marvel at silky hairs between my fingers

He’d yelled when I grabbed

He’d ran when I yanked

Loud as cries of hunger

Quicker than Mom’s steps

Rug rubbing and reddening my knees

Hands gripping the threading beneath me

Toes pushing fabric

Launching myself forward

The beauty of soft black and white escapes my view

Turning a corner, I lose him again

And again
